Carnival is the line most Americans have either sailed or have an opinion about, and the opinions are rarely neutral. It is also the line whose product has changed most in the last two years — a new private destination in the Bahamas, a rebuilt one in the Caribbean, the largest ships it has ever ordered, and a loyalty programme replaced outright. A guide written even eighteen months ago is now wrong in several places.
This one is written to answer a single question honestly: is Carnival the right line for your trip, or are you about to book the wrong vacation cheaply?
What Carnival is known for
Value, energy and access. Carnival is consistently among the least expensive of the major US lines, it sails from more American homeports than anyone else — which for a Midwest family often means driving rather than flying — and the onboard culture is deliberately casual and loud. There is a comedy club, a piano bar, a pub, deck parties, and no expectation that you dress up unless you want to.
What Carnival is not is a quiet ship. That is not a criticism; it is the product. The line has spent decades building a specific kind of holiday and it does it well. The mistake people make is booking it for the price and then wishing it were Celebrity.
Who Carnival suits — and who should look elsewhere
Carnival is a strong fit if you are:
- A family watching the total cost, especially one that can drive to Galveston, New Orleans or Mobile instead of buying four airfares
- A first-time cruiser who wants to try the format without committing a lot of money
- A group — a reunion, a milestone birthday, a bachelor or bachelorette party — where the atmosphere is part of the point
- Travelling with teenagers, who tend to like Carnival ships more than their parents expect
- Sailing short: three, four and five-night Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries are Carnival’s home ground
You will probably be happier elsewhere if you want:
- A quiet ship with an adult-skewing crowd — look at Holland America, Princess or Celebrity
- Serious food and a deep wine list as a core part of the holiday
- The newest and largest hardware and the strongest production entertainment — that is Royal Caribbean
- Flexible dining with no fixed time and no fixed table — Norwegian built its whole product around that
- A European onboard atmosphere at a low fare — MSC

The fleet
Carnival operates the largest fleet in the industry, and the spread between the oldest and newest ships is wide enough that “I sailed Carnival once” tells you very little. Think in classes.
Excel class — the flagship ships
Mardi Gras (2020), Carnival Celebration (2022) and Carnival Jubilee (2023) each carry more than 6,400 guests, run on liquefied natural gas, and are organised into themed “zones” with more than twenty dining venues and the BOLT roller coaster on the top deck. These are the ships to book if you want the modern Carnival product.
Two more are coming: Carnival Festivale in spring 2027, homeported at Port Canaveral and billed as the largest ship Carnival has built, and Carnival Tropicale in 2028 from Galveston.
Vista class
Carnival Vista, Horizon and Panorama — a little smaller, still modern, with the IMAX theatre and SkyRide on some. This class also now includes Carnival Venezia and Carnival Firenze, the two former Costa ships brought over with Italian design, Italian-themed venues and the adults-only Terrazza deck.
The rest of the fleet
Dream class (Dream, Magic, Breeze), Conquest class, Spirit class, Sunshine class and the remaining older ships fill out the deployment. They are smaller, sail more of the short and drive-to-port itineraries, and carry fewer of the headline attractions. That is not automatically a downside — a Spirit-class ship in Alaska is a good product, and smaller ships reach ports the big ones cannot.
The practical rule: pick the ship class before you pick the sailing date. The gap between Mardi Gras and a Conquest-class ship is larger than the gap between two different cruise lines.
Celebration Key — the biggest change to the product
Carnival opened Celebration Key on Grand Bahama on 19 July 2025: a 379-acre private destination built around two large freshwater lagoons, a beach, a ten-storey sandcastle with slides, and more than thirty food and drink outlets. It is not a token beach stop. In its first year it handled roughly 2.4 million guests.
It has since got bigger. A pier extension completed in June 2026 took the berths from two to four, lifting landside capacity to around 13,000 guests a day, and three- and four-ship days become routine from September 2026. Around twenty Carnival ships call there from ten US homeports.
What is included in your fare: the beach, both lagoons, the pools, the splash pad, the sports courts and a selection of meals under the island’s complimentary dining programme. What costs extra: the adults-only Pearl Cove Beach Club, cabanas, daybeds, the private villas, the water slides and equipment rental. Beach club and cabana pricing moves by sailing, so price it in your Cruise Manager rather than trusting a figure you read somewhere.
The one thing almost every article gets wrong: your CHEERS! or Bottomless Bubbles package does not work at Celebration Key. Nor at Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays. Drinks ashore are charged separately. That single fact changes the break-even maths on a Bahamas sailing more than anything else in this guide.
RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay and Isla Tropicale
Half Moon Cay, long the best-regarded private island in the Caribbean, has been rebranded RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay and expanded, with the work celebrated in June 2026. The important structural change is a new pier: for the first time the Excel-class ships can dock directly rather than tender, and around twenty-two ships across Carnival Corporation’s brands now call. New food and drink venues, an island tram and complimentary loungers came with it; cabanas and daybeds remain a paid extra.
Separately, Mahogany Bay in Roatán was rebranded Isla Tropicale in May 2026 with a new pool complex, swim-up bar and kids’ splash area. Together with Celebration Key these three make up what Carnival now markets as its Paradise Collection. Dining
Carnival includes more at no charge than its reputation suggests. Complimentary across most of the fleet: the main dining room for breakfast and dinner, the Lido buffet, Guy’s Burger Joint, the BlueIguana Cantina, the pizzeria, Street Eats, Shaquille’s Big Chicken, and lunch service at Guy’s Pig & Anchor. On the Excel ships, Cucina del Capitano and Chibang are complimentary on a first visit.
Paid venues include Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse, Rudi’s Seagrill, Bonsai Teppanyaki, Il Viaggio, Bonsai Sushi and the Seafood Shack à la carte, and Guy’s Pig & Anchor at dinner. Steakhouse dinner runs about $52 for adults and $15 for children, though prices vary by ship.
One change worth knowing: the service charge on onboard purchases rose to 20% in December 2025, up from 18%. Older articles quoting 18% are out of date, and it applies to specialty dining and drinks alike.
Drinks
CHEERS! is Carnival’s unlimited alcoholic package. The structure matters more than the number, because the number moves:
- Priced per person per day, cheaper pre-cruise than onboard, with a 20% service charge added on top — budget for the total, not the headline
- Fifteen alcoholic drinks per 24-hour period, measured 6am to 6am. One drink at a time
- A $20 per-drink menu cap. Anything above it is discounted 25% rather than excluded
- Every adult 21 or over in the stateroom must buy it. There is no buying one for a couple, and buying the Zero-Proof package for one person does not exempt them
- Non-alcoholic drinks are included and are not counted against the fifteen: sodas, juices, specialty coffee, tea, milkshakes, energy drinks and bottled water
- Excluded: room-service alcohol, bottles, souvenir glassware — and everything at Celebration Key, Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays
There is also CHEERS! Zero-Proof for non-drinkers and Bottomless Bubbles for soda, which rose in price in April 2026 and, unlike CHEERS!, can be bought by one person in a cabin without the others buying anything.
Whether any of this is worth it depends on arithmetic we work through in the cruise drink packages guide — but the short version for Carnival specifically: the private-island exclusion and the all-adults rule are what usually kill the value, not the daily price.
Wi-Fi
Carnival sells tiered internet plans — a basic social tier, a browsing tier and a faster tier that supports streaming and video calls — priced per device per day, with a discount for buying the whole voyage before you sail. Buy it pre-cruise if you know you need it. If you only want to check in occasionally, the lowest tier genuinely is enough, and port Wi-Fi covers the rest.
Entertainment
Carnival’s strength is volume and informality rather than Broadway. Playlist Productions shows are shorter and more music-driven than the big production numbers on Royal Caribbean; the Punchliner Comedy Club runs adult and family sets most nights and is genuinely one of the best things on the ship; Piano Bar 88 and the RedFrog Pub are where the evening actually happens.
On the Excel ships add BOLT, the top-deck roller coaster, and on several ships an IMAX theatre, ropes course or SkyRide. Deck parties and the Lip Sync Battle are unapologetically silly. If production theatre is what sells a ship to you, Carnival is not the strongest choice in the market and it does not claim to be.
Cabins
Beyond the standard categories, Carnival has built several genuinely differentiated stateroom concepts, and knowing they exist is most of the value of talking to an advisor:
- Family Harbor — connecting-friendly cabins plus a private lounge with breakfast and snacks, complimentary children’s specialty dining and a night of babysitting. On Vista, Horizon, Panorama and the Excel ships
- Havana — Cuban-themed staterooms with access to a private Havana pool and bar restricted to guests aged 12 and over during the day. Same ships
- Cloud 9 Spa — cabins with unlimited thermal suite access and priority spa booking, on a wide swathe of the fleet
- Terrazza — the adults-only Italian-themed deck on Carnival Venezia and Carnival Firenze
- Excel Suites and Loft 19 — the top tier on the Excel ships, with a private sun deck, pool and rentable cabanas, concierge service and priority everything

Families, adults and kids
Camp Ocean covers roughly ages two to eleven in three age bands, Circle “C” handles twelve to fourteen and Club O2 the fifteen to seventeens. Carnival is comfortable being a family line and does not hide the children away, which is exactly why some adults prefer a different ship.
For adults there is the Serenity retreat on every ship, the Cloud 9 Spa, the adults-only Terrazza deck on the two Italian ships, and the Pearl Cove Beach Club ashore at Celebration Key. One note worth passing on: guests under eighteen must be out of public areas by 1am unless accompanied by someone twenty-one or over, and Carnival enforces this with fines.
Where Carnival sails
The homeport list is the real advantage. Carnival currently sails from Baltimore, Galveston, Jacksonville, Long Beach, Miami, Mobile, New Orleans, New York, Norfolk, Port Canaveral, San Francisco, Seattle and Tampa. San Francisco is a recent addition for Alaska and Baja sailings.
For a St. Louis family that matters more than it sounds. Galveston, New Orleans and Mobile are all drivable, which removes four or six airfares and the risk of a missed connection on embarkation day. One correction, because it circulates: Charleston is not currently a Carnival homeport. Deployment also shifts — Carnival Sunshine moves to Galveston and Carnival Spirit to Tampa from late 2027, and Mardi Gras moves to short Port Canaveral sailings in 2027 — so confirm the ship and port together rather than assuming last year’s pattern holds.
Itinerary-wise: the Caribbean and Bahamas dominate, with Alaska, Mexico, Bermuda, Canada and New England, and a limited European presence. If Europe is the goal, Carnival is rarely the answer — see the Mediterranean guide instead.
Loyalty — VIFP is being replaced
This is the section most likely to be out of date wherever else you read it. Carnival’s long-running VIFP Club is being replaced by Carnival Rewards, launching 1 September 2026 after a delay from the original June date. All cruising through 31 August 2026 sets your starting position.
The new programme uses four tiers — Red, Gold, Platinum and Diamond — and shifts from counting nights sailed to a spend-based earning model with redeemable points alongside status. Guests who reached Diamond by 31 May 2026 hold it for life, and Platinum members were extended through May 2028. If you have sailed Carnival before, it is worth checking where you landed rather than assuming your old tier carried over unchanged.
What costs extra
The fare covers your cabin, main dining, the buffet and most casual venues, entertainment, kids’ clubs, pools and most onboard activities. Budget separately for:
- Gratuities — since 2 April 2026, $17.00 per person per day in standard staterooms and $19.00 in suites, charged to your onboard account unless you prepay
- Alcohol, soda, bottled water and specialty coffee
- Specialty restaurants, and Guy’s Pig & Anchor at dinner
- Everything at Celebration Key, Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays — drink packages do not apply ashore
- Cabanas, daybeds and beach clubs at the private destinations
- Wi-Fi, shore excursions, the spa and thermal suite
- BOLT, IMAX and some other top-deck attractions
- Room service outside the complimentary breakfast window, plus the casino, photos and laundry

The useful framing is not which line is better. It is that Carnival is the best value in the market for a specific kind of holiday, and poor value for a different one.
Booking considerations
- Pick the ship, then the date. Class matters more than sailing week on this line
- Check whether the itinerary includes Celebration Key, and how many hours the ship is alongside — it is now a genuine highlight rather than a filler day
- Price the drink package honestly, including the service charge, the private-island exclusion and the all-adults rule
- Drive-to ports change the maths. A slightly more expensive fare from Galveston can beat a cheaper one from Miami once you count airfares
- Prepay gratuities if you would rather not see them accumulate on the folio
- Book early for school holidays, spring break and the Excel ships — those sell first

Carnival FAQs
Is Carnival good for families?
Yes, and it is one of the better-value family options in the market. Camp Ocean covers ages two to eleven, and the Family Harbor cabins on the newer ships add a private lounge and a night of babysitting. Teenagers generally do well on the Excel ships and less well on the older, smaller ones.
Does the drink package work at Celebration Key?
No. CHEERS! and Bottomless Bubbles do not apply at Celebration Key, RelaxAway Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays. Drinks ashore are charged to your account separately. This is the single most common misunderstanding about Carnival right now.
Do both adults in a cabin have to buy CHEERS!?
Yes. Every guest aged twenty-one or over in the same stateroom must purchase it, and buying the Zero-Proof package for one person does not exempt them. The non-alcoholic packages can be bought individually.
How much are Carnival gratuities?
Since 2 April 2026, $17.00 per person per day in standard staterooms and $19.00 per person per day in suites, charged daily to your Sail & Sign account. You can prepay before sailing.
Which Carnival ship is the newest?
Carnival Jubilee, which entered service in 2023, is the newest ship currently sailing. Carnival Festivale follows in spring 2027 from Port Canaveral and will be the largest in the fleet, with Carnival Tropicale from Galveston in 2028.
What happened to the VIFP Club?
It is being replaced by Carnival Rewards from 1 September 2026, with four tiers and a spend-based earning model. Sailings through 31 August 2026 set your starting tier, and Diamond members who qualified by 31 May 2026 keep that status for life.
Is Carnival cheaper than Royal Caribbean?
Usually, and often noticeably so on comparable Caribbean sailings. Whether it is better value depends on what you would use. If your family will spend the week on waterslides and at production shows, the extra on Royal Caribbean buys something real. If you are going for sun, food and a warm ocean, Carnival gets you there for less.
Can I drive to a Carnival port from St. Louis?
Galveston, New Orleans and Mobile are all drivable, and for a family of four that saving usually exceeds any fare difference between lines. Charleston, despite what several sites claim, is not currently a Carnival homeport.
What is the dress code?
Casual almost all the time, with an optional Cruise Elegant evening on longer sailings where people dress up if they feel like it. Nobody will stop you eating in the main dining room in a collared shirt.
